Evolution of a handicapping software product
Dave and Len invited me to send them criteria for a
software product.
It took me a long time to do so, because I was not
interested in selling software.
But finally I said "yes" because Len's expert research
could help me with my own
search for the automatic bet, and thus, with my own
betting.
I told them that there would be no product with my name on
it unless the research showed
it would be clearly profitable for the player. (The Short
Form is a combination of trainer stats and class.)
Poor trainers and proven losers at a class level are
eliminated. I asked Len if he
could make my class criteria more nuanced, which he did.
Len's research on my Short Form came in, and it showed a
profit for all claiming
races and a profit for all routes, with large samples.
I thus gave them the go-ahead.
So far they've had good responses from readers. At this
point the software is a great time saver
as well as a significant handicapping aid. It automates
and filters a large percentage of the
handicapping process, but not all of it.
I would also like to see it as a blindly automatic bet.
Therefore, currently I am doing
real-bet research in hopes that I can make it 100%
automatic. So far, so good, but the
sample is much too small to start declaring victory. I
will share the longer sample with
readers of the Altiplano website.
Players who simply want a pencil-and-paper version of the
Short Form will find it in my
upcoming book: Handicapping on the Road
I paid for this entire
adventure through bets I made at these 11 tracks. But the
book goes beyond those 11 tracks and provides handicapping
lessons for foreign racing in general, with examples from
England, Dubai, and other racing venues.
